ABC's of Kathleen
A is for ALWAYS
B is for BE the
C is for CHANGE you want to see in the world
I was thrilled to be given the opportunity to attend the High Tech High Graduate School of Education. As I sat in an informational meeting for my own child at the North County High Tech High campus, I realized how much I wanted to be a part of a “culture of collaboration.” The mission and goals for the High Tech High Graduate program immediately hooked me, and I knew I needed to be a part of such an innovative and authentic model. I am excited to be a part of this two-year teacher leadership program where I will be able to deepen my skills as an educator and continue to grow as a learner.
I am willing to take risks, and I want to learn the best practices for my students and other teachers. Four years ago, I took a risk, left a great job with tenure and joined a group of like minded teachers to help start a charter school in North County San Diego. It was created to give parents and children a choice in their education. However, sadly, it was shut down. But even though I lost my job, took a cut in pay, lost my tenure, lost hope in some aspects of education, I couldn’t give up on my students and their families. I knew the dream of creating the best school still burned alive in my heart. I’m trying to make a difference at my new site, Phoenix Learning Center, through Julian Charter School. I want to help bring to my new site effective strategies for collaboration and cultivate a program that inspires youngsters and adults to be passionate, life-long learners.
